A look at Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood

Soon after the February 2011 fall of Hosni Mubarak, the Muslim Brotherhood opened its first public headquarters in a luxury villa in Cairo, with its symbol, two golden swords under the Quran with the slogan "Prepare," displayed on giant sign on the front. It was a landmark moment: After decades as a banned organization, the Muslim fundamentalist group was declaring it was now legal, public and a powerhouse in the new Egypt. Symbolically, the headquarters was located on a plateau where many of the group's early, executed leaders were buried decades ago.

Elections made it the strongest party in parliament and elevated one of its own, Mohammed Morsi, as the country's first democratically chosen president. On Monday, that headquarters was overrun, burned and ransacked by protesters who demanded Morsi's ouster.

A look at the Brotherhood:

STRUCTURE

The Brotherhood was founded in 1928, advocating rule by Shariah, or Islamic law, and grew into Egypt's most organized, disciplined and widespread political group, with millions of members nationwide and branches across the Islamic world.

At the top is the "general guide," currently Mohammed Badie. The group's executive leadership body is the Guidance Council, made up of 16-19 members. The general guide and the guidance council are chosen by the Shoura Council, the group's version of a legislature made up of 75-90 members chosen by regional councils nationwide.

The man believed to be the most powerful member is Badie's deputy, Khairat el-Shater, a wealthy businessman who was initially the Brotherhood's candidate for president until he was disqualified because of a previous prison term. Morsi ran in his place.

The Brotherhood's members swear an oath to "listen and obey" the group's leadership and are organized into a tight hierarchy. At the base is the "usra" or "family," basically a study group small enough that its members can meet regularly, build personal bonds, and discuss the group's teachings on Islam. Each of the thousands of "families" nationwide reports up a pyramid of authority and gets instructions from above.

Families in the blood-relative sense of the word also play a major role. Brotherhood members tend to marry within the organization, socialize together in its network of mosques, clubs and schools, and raise their children in the group. Its members include a wide range of professionals ? doctors, engineers, teachers and, importantly, very successful businessmen whose profits along with required dues help fund the group.

The group also runs extensive charities, providing free or cheap medical care, food and other services to the poor.

That structure helped the group survive and even spread during its years of arrests and crackdowns, particularly under Mubarak. It also made it a powerful force in elections, able to bring out many highly organized volunteers to campaign for Brotherhood candidates.

___

"THE BANNED ORGANIZATION"

In its early decades, the Brotherhood was involved in assassinations of Egypt's British colonial rulers and Egyptian officials. In 1954, President Gamal Abdel-Nasser banned the Brotherhood after blaming it for a failed assassination attempt against him. Leaders were executed and thousands of its members imprisoned, often subjected to torture.

In the next nearly 60 years, however, it grew, sometimes underground, sometimes semi-overt. It would test the limits of what the regimes would allow or would strike tacit deals with authorities, sometimes facing heavy crackdowns if it went too far.

Abdel-Nasser's successor, Anwar Sadat, initially gave it some room to maneuver, and the group formally renounced the use of violence in 1973. The Brotherhood and other Islamist movements established strong networks in the universities, although Sadat arrested many when student activists began to denounce his rule. They were later freed by Mubarak, who took power after Sadat's 1981 assassination.

Under Mubarak, the group made forays into parliamentary elections, although the regime's rigid control and vote-rigging ensured opposition victories were minimal. It was allowed to run candidates under recognized opposition political parties in the mid- 1980s. In the early 1990s, it performed strongly in union elections, winning control of the leadership of several. Mubarak lashed back, suspending union leaderships and arresting Brotherhood members.

In the 2000s, the group pushed back into politics, running candidates as independents in parliamentary elections. Moderates in the group argued that the Brotherhood accepted the principles of democracy, and that the only way Egypt could be truly democratic was if the group was legal and allowed to compete freely. Its biggest victory came in 2005, when its candidates won a fifth of parliament's seats, despite clashes when Mubarak's security forces tried to block opposition voters.

The stunning showing prompted a new backlash. Mubarak's regime accused the group of plotting violence and money-laundering, jailing some of its top leaders, including al-Shater. Mubarak also rolled back promised political reforms, passing constitutional amendments that solidified his party's grip on elections.

When mainly leftist and secular youth called for massive protests against Mubarak on Jan. 25, 2011, the Brotherhood's leadership declined to join. However, young members did, and after a few days the leadership backed the protests. Still, even during the height of the 18-day uprising, Brotherhood officials met with Mubarak's intelligence chief, raising accusations they were willing to strike a deal if the ban on the group was lifted.

Soon after Mubarak fell on Feb. 11, 2011, the military rulers who took power lifted the ban. It quickly formed its first political party, the Freedom and Justice Party, initially led by Morsi.

___

IDEOLOGY

The organization calls for rule by God's law in Egypt, although it is often vague. Members say the group tolerates a range of opinion, but all on the conservative end of the scale.

Two figures hold a powerful sway over the Brotherhood's thought: Hassan al-Banna and Sayed Outb.

Al-Banna, a former teacher, founded the Brotherhood to resist both Britain's colonial rule and secularism in Egyptian society. Deeply conservative, he was a strong organizer and emphasized the idea that preaching and activism will spread the word of Islam. He was assassinated in 1949.

Qutb, a secular writer-turned-Islamist, rose in the Brotherhood in the 1950s and 1960s. He advocated a hard-line view that Islam must transform society and that a society that did not follow its precepts was in the "Jahiliya," or pre-Islamic pagan age. His ideology had a strong influence on modern-day jihadist groups. He was executed by Abdel-Nasser's regime in 1966.

The Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party's platform calls for Egypt to be a "civil, democratic state with an Islamic basis," saying it accepts the precepts of liberal democracy, such as free elections, the transfer of power and the will of elected bodies in establishing law. But the group, along with other Islamists, put clauses into the post-Mubarak constitution strengthening requirements that laws passed by parliament must not contradict Shariah.

At the same time, many in the top leadership are seen as religious hard-liners, and the ultraconservative Salafi ideology has made strong inroads into the group recently.

Growing as a Person: Tips to Reach Your Full Potential | Personal ...

There are three kinds of people when it comes to reaching your fullest potential:

1)????? People who have no idea who they want to become, what they want to do, or where they want to go with their life; and drift as a result.

2)????? People who know exactly where they want to go and who they want to become but never do it. Why? Usually because they have fears that hold them back, they are not willing to pay the price, or they worry about other responsibilities that will go unfulfilled.

3)????? People who know exactly where they want to go and do it. They act every day with passion, focus, and determination. Failures are nothing more than stepping stones for learning and growth. These are the people who grow to reach their fullest potential.

To grow as a person and reach for your full potential, the best place to start is with identifying your strengths, values, and passions. There is a connection between reaching your potential and being aware of your passions. And more often than not your passions will flow from your strengths and values. When you connect with your passions it allows you to act every day from your heart; it gives you the energy to propel you toward your goals, while overcoming setbacks and failure.

To discover your passions it is important to listen to your heart; pay attention to what you love to do over and over again. Ask yourself, where can I use my strengths, where can I exercise my values, where can I make a difference, what fulfills me?? Being aware of who you are, fulfilling what you want to do with your life and who you want to become is the most important thing you will ever do.

To reach your full potential you must know where you want to go. How do we move from where we are to where we want to go? It is a process! Consider these ideas I learned from John C. Maxwell from his book The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth:

1)????? Develop an awareness of where your choices and actions are taking you today. Are they taking you in the direction you want to go? Are they growing you into the person you want to become? If not, make a list of the steps you must take to get to where you want to go. Think about where and how you can use your strengths, live your values, and pursue your passions.

2)????? Take action every day in the direction of where you want to go in life. The key is taking the right actions that will move you forward toward your goals. And it is important to take the right actions every day. A small step in the right direction every day will eventually become gigantic steps toward reaching your potential.

3)????? Hold yourself accountable to keep moving forward. Here are two very helpful ideas. ?First, go public with your goals. When you tell others what you intend to accomplish it puts pressure on you to perform. Second, every day write down what actions you took to move you forward toward your goals. The process forces you to take a look at your daily decisions and actions.

4)????? Attract the right people to you. We all attract people toward us who are like us. When you start growing and moving toward your passions, you will begin to attract people who are moving in the same direction as you want to go. You will start to attract people like the person you want to become. When you are focused on pursuing your dreams, you will attract people who are pursuing similar dreams. This places you in a position to work with and receive support from like-minded people.

5)????? Be prepared to pay the price. To grow and move forward requires people to change. To face our fears will require change. To overcome obstacles will require change. To change will require giving up things you enjoy.

6)????? Don?t wait until you are ready. If you wait until you have enough money, enough education, enough time, enough experience, or meet the right people, you will never get started; and getting started is the only thing that is important. You must adopt the attitude you will learn as you go. You must assume the attitude you will learn from your mistakes as you continue to move forward. You must get started on the journey if you ever hope to? reach your full potential.

This quote by John Maxwell speaks to the rewards of pursuing your passions, allowing you to grow as a person toward your full potential. ?People say there are two great days in a person?s life: the day you were born and the day you discover why.?

Student loan rates double without Congress' action

(AP) ? College students taking out new loans for the fall term will see interest rates twice what they were in the spring ? unless Congress fulfills its pledge to restore lower rates when it returns after the July 4 holiday.

Subsidized Stafford loans, which account for roughly a quarter of all direct federal borrowing, went from 3.4 percent interest to 6.8 percent interest on Monday. Congress' Joint Economic Committee estimated the cost passed to students would be about $2,600.

"It's kind of surprising; that's a big jump," said Rebecca Ehlers, an Iowa State University senior majoring in math.

A $1,000 subsidized Stafford loan is part of her financial aid package and she said she's reconsidering how she pays for school.

"I may work more or ask my parents for money rather than going through all that," said Ehlers, 21.

She ? and millions of others who use federal student loans to pay for their education ? has some time before she has to make that decision. But not much.

"The only silver lining is that relatively few borrowers take out student loans in July and early August. You really can't take out student loans more than 10 days before the term starts," said Terry Hartle, a top official with colleges' lobbying operation at the American Council on Education.

But that is little consolation for students looking at unexpected costs waiting for them on graduation day if Congress doesn't take action before it breaks again for the month of August.

"I'm upset by it," said Kolton Gustafson, a George Washington University political science major heading into his senior year. "I wish there was a larger reaction to it."

"Many students are saying and thinking, 'I'll pay it later,'" the Grand Junction, Colo., native added. "That's why you don't see more people fighting back."

Students only borrow money for one year at a time. Loans taken before Monday are not affected by the rate hike.

Both political parties tried to blame the other for the hike and student groups complained the increase in interest rates would add to student loan debt that already surpasses credit card debt in this country.

"The federal loan program is burying them in debt. With the doubling of the interest rate, Congress is pushing student borrowers to their limit," said Michael Russo, federal program director with consumer advocate U.S. PIRG.

Lawmakers knew for a full year the July 1 deadline was coming but were unable to strike a deal to dodge that increase. During last year's presidential race, both parties pledged to extend the 3.4 percent interest rates for another year to avoid angering young voters.

But the looming hike lacked sufficient urgency this year and Congress last week left town for the holiday without an agreement. Instead, the Democratic-led Senate pledged to revisit the issue as soon as July 10 and retroactively restore the rates for another year ? into 2014, when a third of Senate seats and all House seats are up for election.

Even when lawmakers return, there's no guarantee there will be the votes to restore the lower rates.

"When we pass a deadline and there are not immediate effects, the sense of urgency that accompanies a deadline evaporates and that is what I'm afraid will happen here," Hartle said.

For months, the student loan issue was the subject of partisan sniping ? sometimes within the same party.

Obama's budget proposal included a measure that would have linked student loan interest rates with the financial markets. Fellow Democrats called that unacceptable because there were no guarantees interest rates would not skyrocket if the economy improves.

The Republican-led House, meanwhile, co-opted the president's proposal and passed a bill in May that linked interest rates to the financial markets but with a cap on how high rates could climb.

The Democratic-led Senate, meanwhile, tried for a two-year extension that failed to overcome a procedural hurdle. A Republican measure, similarly, came up short.

Top White House officials told allies to find any deal that could win enough votes and avert the politically and fiscally costly doubling.

An attempt at a bipartisan agreement fizzled last week when the Democratic chairman of the Senate education panel, Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa, declared it a non-starter and urged lawmakers to extend the rates for one more year ? when they get back next week.

Recession hit aviation industry hard, taking 11,000 Wichita jobs

A pending closure at Boeing Wichita, a deep downturn in the general aviation industry and a bankruptcy have cost Wichita thousands of jobs since the end of 2008.

At the same time, new programs at Bombardier Learjet and at Spirit AeroSystems, along with strong commercial aircraft orders, have boosted employment at those two companies.

The economic downturn that hit the nation and the state in late 2007 delivered an especially hard punch to Wichita. The recession came after three years of record deliveries by general aviation planemakers, and the order books were bulging at Cessna Aircraft, Hawker Beechcraft and Bombardier Learjet.

As the bad economics news rolled in, customers canceled orders and the planemakers cut back production and employment to match.

At the same time, companies are doing more with fewer people. They also have moved work outside their companies, including to local suppliers and to Mexico.

Local suppliers to the industry also cut jobs in the downturn as orders for parts and assemblies fell to match. Today, they report they?re busy as demand for the robust commercial aviation market continues to increase. Boeing and Airbus, for example, are boosting airliner production.

Overall, however, total employment at Wichita?s five largest aviation manufacturers hasn?t returned to pre-recession figures.

Today, the companies combined employ about 24,700 people, down nearly 11,000 employees, or 31 percent, from the end of 2008.

Overall, aerospace employment in the Wichita metro area, including suppliers, totaled about 46,400 during the late 1990s. In 2004, that number had fallen to 31,600 before climbing to 41,500 in 2008.

But by mid-2011, employment had fallen to 29,900.

Today, employment in the sector totals 30,300.

Beechcraft

Hawker Beechcraft emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February as a smaller, restructured company called Beechcraft Corp. Today, it focuses on its piston, turboprop, military and after-market business.

The company exited its unprofitable business jet production during the restructuring, a move that meant a loss of about 1,100 jobs over the past year. During the downturn in the business jet market, the company cut jobs to match lower demand. In November 2008, Hawker announced the first of the job cuts, saying it would lay off 500 people as the market started to decline. Layoffs continued in 2009. At the end of 2008, the company employed 7,500 people. Today, it employs roughly 3,500. The market remains difficult. And while the past few years have been tough, officials say the company has emerged from bankruptcy well positioned for the future.

Boeing Wichita

In January 2012, the community was rocked by the news that after 85 years in Wichita, Boeing had decided to close its local facility, which focuses on military work.

Programs had matured, had come to a close or were winding down with not enough business on the horizon to replace them. Since then, some employees have taken jobs with Boeing in Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Puget Sound. Others have retired. About 470 employees were laid off in 2012, followed by about 300 layoffs so far this year. The facility is scheduled to close in early 2014. In late 2008, Boeing employed about 3,000 people. In early 2012, employment was down to 2,160. Today, it employs about 1,000. Boeing notes that it will continue to have a significant presence in the city, where it is Spirit AeroSystems? largest customer.

Bombardier Learjet

At Bombardier Learjet, employment is up from five years ago after falling during the downturn. That?s largely because of the new Learjet 85, Learjet 70 and Learjet 75 programs in development ? plus an expansion of its busy Wichita flight test center. The flight test center tests all Bombardier aircraft, including Bombardier planes built in Canada. At the end of 2008, the facility employed 2,676, including contractors. Today, that figure totals 3,417.

Cessna Aircraft

Before the downturn, Cessna Aircraft deliveries were setting records, and the company was adding employees and boosting production to meet demand. At the end of 2008, Cessna employed about 12,000 people in Wichita. In November of that year, Cessna announced the first of the job cuts, saying it would cut 665 jobs as the downturn began. In January 2009, Cessna announced the need to shed another 4,000 jobs. Today, employment is about half of what it was five years ago. The market remains difficult. This year, Cessna recalled about 100 hourly workers, but in April it offered early retirement packages to employees and laid off others. It now employs 5,664.

Spirit AeroSystems

At the end of 2008, Spirit AeroSystems, the city?s largest private employer, employed 10,400 people in Wichita. Today, that figure has increased to 11,100. That?s because the company has taken on new development programs and because Boeing continues to raise production rates on its airliners. Spirit builds parts of all Boeing commercial airplanes in Wichita, including the entire fuselage of the popular 737 single-aisle plane. Demand is robust as airlines replace older aircraft and add more fuel-efficient planes.

U.S. 'not threatened' by China's surge in Africa ? Obama

PRETORIA ?- The United States does not feel threatened by the growth of trade and investment in Africa by China and other emerging powers, U.S. President Barack Obama said on Saturday.

?

"I don't feel threatened by it. I feel it's a good thing," Obama told a news conference during a visit to South Africa.

?

He said the more countries invested in Africa the more the world's least developed continent could be integrated into the global economy.

?

"I want everybody playing in Africa. The more the merrier," Obama said.

?

Obama is embarked on an eight-day trip through Africa to promote trade and business ties between the United States and the continent.

?

However, he has had to defend his administration against charges it has lagged its predecessors in the level of engagement with Africa, leaving countries like China to reap the economic benefits of a more aggressive approach.

?

The president's aides have argued that Obama has had two wars and a deep economic crisis to deal with since he took office in 2009.

?

Obama has also said that U.S. interactions with Africa have included goals of social and political development, unlike those of China, which he said were more narrowly focused on commercial benefits.

?

"A lot of people are pleased that China is involved in Africa," he told reporters travelling with him on Friday.

?

"On the other hand, they recognise that China's primary interest is being able to obtain access for natural resources in Africa to feed the manufacturers in export-driven policies of the Chinese economy."

?

That relationship makes Africa an exporter of raw materials but does not create jobs in Africa and is not a sustainable model over the long-term, he added.

?

China surpassed the United States as Africa's largest trading partner in 2009, a U.S. government report released in February said. ?? Reuters
