New agency ready to take over southwest La. health, disabilities ...

LAKE CHARLES -- The head of a new agency to run behavioral health and developmental disabilities services in southwest Louisiana says the Imperial Calcasieu Human Service Authority will be able to tailor programs to local needs.

The board's eight members have been preparing since September 2010 to take over control of those services in five parishes, The American Press reported.

A 2008 law set up such boards around Louisiana.

Imperial Calcasieu's 100 employees will all remain state workers, in state buildings, executive director Tanya McGee said. "The only thing that changes is that the control will be local," she said.

The new agency will bring under one roof the Department of Health and Hospitals offices that oversee addictive disorders, mental health and residents with disabilities. Its budget will be about $13 million.

DHH will relinquish full control over behavior health and developmental disabilities services employees and money in July 2013.

"As our own legal entity we will also be able to obtain funds from other sources through grants and partnerships," McGee said. "People need to understand, our same core services provided through DHH in past years will remain the same."
