Bass smashed in Nirvana video could fetch $40K

By Rolling Stone

The bass that Krist Novoselic played and Kurt Cobain smashed in the video for Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"?will be up for auction by Christie's in London on Nov. 29.

The seller of the 1960s Japanese Zen-On bass was a teenager at the time of the video's shoot; he had applied to be an extra, and grabbed the bass from the set.

Knowing the bass would be destroyed, Novoselic sought an inexpensive piece of gear, and purchased the bass at a local pawn shop. The instrument is expected to fetch between $24,000 and more than $40,000.

What cinema experiences have you shared with your kids or loved ...

Photo: Richard Lewis/European Pressphoto Agency

Do you have movie events in your household? We do. The year before last, to introduce my youngest daughter, Katie, to the three original ?Star Wars? movies, we had three successive dinner/movie nights with my brother, who is quite a film buff.

So when I mentioned Tuesday?s news that Walt Disney Co. will buy?Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion?and plans to release a seventh live-action ?Star Wars? movie in 2015, my 9-year-old?s observation was that this will ultimately lead to more movie nights.

Movie nights are a great way to share theatrical experiences with a new generation or someone else who has somehow managed to avoid the experience the first time around. Right now, Katie and I are working our way through reading all of the Harry Potter books. She?s seen all of the movies through the years, but this is her first experience with the source literature.

I promised her that when we do complete all seven books, we will have a Harry Potter movie marathon weekend. We?re halfway through Book 4, ?Goblet of Fire,? right now, so I estimate that it will take us at least another year to achieve this milestone.

Shortly after my boyfriend and I began dating a year and a half ago, we started working our way through re-viewing the entire collection of James Bond films. So far 22 official films in the series have been released, which began 50 years ago with ?Dr. No.?

Over the summer, we realized that the next film, ?Skyfall,? is opening on Nov. 9. We grew more attentive to the pace of our viewing, so we?d be all caught up before that one comes out. Last night we watched ?Casino Royale,? Daniel Craig?s first outing as the super-spy. One more to go ? ?Quantum of Solace? ? before our next big screen outing.

Another favorite series of mine in recent years was the ?Lord of the Rings? movies, which somehow my boyfriend has managed to avoid (that can?t have been by choice, right?). Yesterday, I saw a Twitter post about a?Denny?s Restaurant ?Hobbit?-inspired menu ? ?What about elevensies? Luncheon? Afternoon tea? Dinner? Supper? He knows about them, doesn?t he??

I worked at Denny?s enough years that I?m not thrilled about this marketing tie-in with one of my favorite movie series. But it did get me to thinking ? if Denny?s has a special ?Hobbit? menu right now, that means the movie must be coming out sooner than I realized.

I got online and checked. Yep ? Dec. 14. Just enough time to catch the boyfriend up on the ?Lord of the Rings? trilogy before the new one hits the big screen!

What movie favorites have you shared with your children or loved ones? And do you spread your viewing out over a reasonable amount of time, or go full-bore and have a weekend marathon?

Disney to make new 'Star Wars' films, buy Lucas co

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A decade since George Lucas said "Star Wars" was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy under new ownership is destined for theaters after The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it would buy Lucasfilm Ltd. from him for $4.05 billion.

The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

"I'm doing this so that the films will have a longer life," Lucas, the 68-year-old creator of the series and sole owner of Lucasfilm, said in an interview posted on YouTube. "I get to be a fan now ... I sort of look forward to it. It's a lot more fun actually, than actually having to go out into the mud and snow."

Disney CEO Bob Iger said Lucasfilm had already developed an extensive storyline on the next trilogy, and Episode 7 was now in early-stage development. He said he talked with Lucas about buying the company from him a year and a half ago, but they didn't decide on a deal until very recently as Lucas set in motion his retirement.

"The last 'Star Wars' movie release was 2005's 'Revenge of the Sith' ? and we believe there's substantial pent-up demand," Iger said.

The blockbuster deal announced Tuesday will see Disney pay half the acquisition price in cash and half in newly issued stock. The company expects it to add to earnings in 2015 and said that as an example of its earnings power, Lucasfilm made $550 million in operating income the year "Sith" came out. Along with the cash, Lucas will end up owning about 40 million Disney shares, which is about 2.2 percent of the 1.83 billion shares that will be in circulation when the transaction closes. Disney did not say when that would happen.

The deal includes Lucasfilm's prized high-tech production companies, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound, as well as rights to the "Indiana Jones" franchise. Lucasfilm will continue to be headquartered in San Francisco's Presidio park, and employees are to remain in their current locations. Disney has its headquarters in Burbank, Calif., near Los Angeles.

The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, the Muppets, Marvel, ESPN and ABC, all companies that Disney has acquired over the years. Coincidentally, Lucas created Pixar as a division of Lucasfilm to develop computerized filmmaking techniques before he sold it to Apple's Steve Jobs, who later sold it to Disney.

Twitter went wild with the news as fans speculated on mash-up titles for future movies, using the hashtag "DisneyStarWars." Among the amusing attempts were "When You Wish Upon a Death Star" and "Bambi Wan Kenobi." ''Star Wars," ''LucasArts," ''Disney," and "Indiana Jones" were all trending topics on Twitter after the deal was announced late Tuesday afternoon.

Fan club co-founder Ming Pan, a graphic designer in San Francisco, said he was glad audiences would get another "Star Wars" movie but worried whether the franchise would thrive after Lucas passes the torch.

"It's something that I thought may happen down the line, but I just didn't expect it to happen while Lucas was still alive because he has always expressed such a tight control over the 'Star Wars' license," Pan said.

Lucas was hailed as a cinematic visionary when the original "Star Wars" came out in 1977. But he had become an object of often-vicious ridicule by the time he started releasing 3-D versions of all six films in the franchise this year.

Die-hard fans had been vilifying Lucas for years, convinced that he had become a commercial sell-out and had compounded his sins by desecrating the heroic tale that he originally sought to tell.

They railed against him for adding grating characters such as Jar Jar Binks to the prequel trilogy, which Lucas directed and which came out from 1999 to 2005. They attacked him for tinkering with the original trilogy that spanned 1977 to 1983, too. Revisions in special editions and home video releases ? such as making the Ewoks blink and having a green-skinned alien named Greedo take the first shot at Han Solo in a famous bar scene ? were treated as blasphemy.

The criticism grated on Lucas, who vowed never to make another "Star Wars" movie.

"Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?" Lucas told The New York Times earlier this year.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the fourth film in another lucrative franchise, subjected Lucas to even more barbs when it came to theaters in 2008. Fans of those films were especially outraged about an opening scene that featured Indiana Jones crawling into a lead-lined refrigerator to survive a nuclear bomb blast.

Lucas was fed up by the time he released "Red Tails," a movie depicting the valor of African-American pilots during World War II, earlier this year. He told the Times he was ready to retire from the business of making blockbusters and return to his roots as a student at University of Southern California's film school, where he once made a movie about clouds moving in a desert.

Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the division's president at Disney and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. She will serve as executive producer for the new movies. Directors for the new movies have not yet been announced. The movies are destined to be live action, not animated, Iger said.

In the YouTube video, Lucas said the decision to continue with the saga didn't contradict past statements.

"I always said I wasn't going to do any more and that's true, because I'm not going to do any more, but that doesn't mean I'm unwilling to turn it over to Kathy to do more," Lucas said.

He said he has given Kennedy his storylines and other ideas, "and I have complete confidence that she's going to take them and make great movies."

Kennedy added that she and Lucas had discussed ideas with a couple of writers about the future movies and said Lucas would continue to have a key advisory role. "My Yoda has to be there," she said.

The scope of the "Star Wars" universe is staggering with hundreds of books, comics and other storylines that Lucasfilm has approved.

In May 1991, author Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" took up the story of Luke, Leia and Han five years after the events in "Return of The Jedi," which hit theaters in 1983. The characters go on to fight remnants of the evil Empire, marry, have children and battle a new crop of Force-powered enemies.

Season 5 of the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" is currently airing on Cartoon Network.

To date, the "Star Wars" movies have grossed $4.4 billion, and even years after the last film, the franchise continues to make money from merchandising. Disney's chief financial officer, Jay Rasulo, said that this year alone, "Star Wars" is on track to generate $215 million in licensing revenue. He added that, adjusting for inflation, the latest three releases in theaters would have generated $1.5 billion each at the box office today.

Disney plans to make movies, games and TV shows and expand on "Star Wars" theme park attractions that are already present in parks in Anaheim, Calif., Orlando, Fla., Paris and Tokyo.

Disney chief executive Iger, a former weatherman who rose through the ranks of ABC, has orchestrated some of the company's biggest acquisitions, including the $7.4 billion purchase of animated movie studio Pixar in 2006 and the $4.2 billion acquisition of comic book giant Marvel in 2009.

Jobs bought Pixar from Lucasfilm in 1986 for about $5 million and later sold it to Disney. When that happened, Jobs became Disney's largest single shareholder with a 7.7 percent stake. Those shares are now held in a trust.

Disney shares were not trading with stock markets closed due to the impact of Superstorm Sandy in New York. They closed on Friday at $50.08, near its 52-week high of $53.40. Shares are up 34 percent so far this year.

Hurricane Sandy inspires home cooking - Mother Nature Network

Greetings from the front end of Hurricane Sandy. Here in South Jersey, the rains started in earnest sometime in the middle of the night, but we?re not expected to get the brunt of the storm until much later tonight. School is cancelled for the next two days, and I slept until an indulgent 9 a.m. this morning. I was very happy to still have power this morning when we woke up. There are power outages just 15 minutes south of me.

?

The big talk on Facebook yesterday was storm preparation, and I asked my friends what they were stocking up on or cooking to prepare for Sandy. It?s no surprise that comfort foods came up a lot. Food can comfort, and when people are worried impending harm to themselves and their loved ones, destruction of property, and an interruption to their normal routines, they turn to favorite foods to help them get through it.

?

What is everyone cooking? Here?s a roundup:

?

  • Slow cooker favorites ? Chicken and pork cooked for pulled meat sandwiches as well as roast beef and stews were mentioned by several people. Big batches of foods like those that can be reheated on gas stoves if the electricity goes out are a great idea.

  • Soups ? Chicken noodle, of course, but also soups like lentil with sausage, butternut squash, and broccoli cheddar are going to get families through the next couple of days.

  • Chili ? I needed to buy chili powder the other week, and it was all sold out. Last week, I was able to get it, but I took the last two jars off the shelf. It?s obviously chili season anyway, but a good pot of chili cooking on the stove ? with or without meat ? will certainly be comforting during a storm.

  • Pasta, meatballs and gravy ? There were lots of pasta dishes being baked and lots of meatballs and homemade gravy (sauce) making homes smell wonderful yesterday.

  • Hardboiled eggs ? This is something I wouldn?t have thought of, but several people mentioned they were hard boiling eggs so if the power went out, they?d have them ready for eating or making egg salad.

  • One-offs ? Chicken schnitzel sandwiches with cole slaw, spare ribs, Cornish game hens, and smothered pork chops ? most of these dishes made with mashed potatoes on the side ? were in my friends? ovens yesterday.

  • Baked goods ? Brownies and cookies topped the list, but MNN?s family blogger Jenn was baking her daughter?s birthday cake a couple days early just in case she doesn?t have power tomorrow on her birthday.
  • Me - I roasted a chicken yesterday. We had a wonderful dinner last night of chicken and gravy, corn bread, mashed potatoes and broccoli. Today, I have lots of leftover chicken to make soup if I we still have power or chicken salad if the power goes out.

?

How about stocking up? Most people realize that at some point they might not have the ability to cook, so they are also stocking up on non-perishables.

?

  • Water

  • Peanut butter

  • Raw fruits and vegetables

  • Bread

  • Coffee

  • Granola bars

  • Pizza (one friend had several pizzas delivered and was counting on room temperature leftovers lasting a day or two if the power went out)

  • Wine, beer, alcohol and mixers ? these were the most mentioned items of all!

?

My friends and neighbors are certainly well prepared to eat (and drink) their way through the storm, but I want to mention that it?s not just food that people were sharing yesterday on Facebook. They were also sharing support. I saw so many mentions of open-ended offers to help anyone who needed it including people offering up their homes for anyone being evacuated from the coastal regions. I also saw a lot of prayers and well wishes.

?

If you?re in the path of Sandy, I hope you stay dry, safe and warm.

The Search For Cheap Boats | recreation and sports blog updates ...

Only very few can forget their first ever experience in sailing. Most of the time, this will be a treasured experience. This is why when people grow up to a good old age, somehow someway, there is the urge to buy a watercraft, even with just some cheap boats.

In the quest to purchase a watercraft, many things are to be considered. This is not something people could trifle with because the fact remains that getting out in the water is riskier than being on dry ground. This means that it is important to get a good water vessel to be safe. It must be one that is free of serious problems.

Of course, if there are a lot of choices, a person would always choose one that is brand new. The problem is, brand new boats are very expensive. Nobody needs to ask the price to know that it is. It is for this reason that some would just settle for the used ones or the cheap ones.

Choosing used boats can be tricky. Thinking about it can already be tricky, let alone starting the process of really hunting for one. Good thing this article will discuss some of the more important things on how to purchase a water vessel.

The very first to consider when buying a water vessel is to know to what extent will this be used. For example, if the person is going to use it for the mere reason of sailing, like the relaxing, slow sailing one can do in the weekend, then a boat that is not so fast can already suffice. However, when this is to be used for water sports, then it will need greater power and speed.

If this is going to be used for transportation of goods or people, then it does not really need to be fast but rather powerful. There may be a need to let it go fast but there will also be a greater need to have the cargo safely delivered.

After knowing what its purpose is, the next thing to know is where it is going to sail. This means the body of water it is going to travel on. Naturally, bigger bodies of water will need bigger boats while a small boat can be used in small body of water. This is important because the price of the vessel will somehow be parallel with its size.

Getting the right answers to these two considerations can get you to start the actual process of hunting for cheap boats. The search will be narrower now and it may be better for the actual inspection of the unit.

Welcome, Ladies and Gentlemen to the Valonian Archives, and the Valonian Explicarium. The Explicarium contains various details about the beings, organizations and inhabitants of our great Empire, and endeavours to answer any questions that visitors may have.

The Valon Explicarium

The Capital

The large city that stands as the economic and political centre of Valon. It is the place where Magefire is used most frequently and where Esoteric Technology is the most common. The shopping, industrial, and richer residential districts all have lights and heating powered by the Magefire grid. The Industrial district powers its factories that way. The poorer areas, mostly inhabited by factory workers, still tend to rely on candles and fires. The City Watch patrols and keeps an eye out for misbehaviour, though their numbers are supplemented by the Golems.

Golems

Golems are metal constructs assembled by the Esoteric Technologists in order to perform menial tasks. They are constructed from a brassy metal and leather joint coverings, and appear to be powered by Magefire. Golems are regarded as non-sentient creatures, though they have some level of intelligence. They are able to follow commands given to them, and will also do their best to protect citizens around them in the event of danger. Normally however they are passive and won't defend themselves against an attack, but can be quite a force to be reckoned with if commanded to take offensive action. They posses immobile masks where their faces would be. Some appear to speak, though only to parrot pre-programmed phrases.

Esoteric Technologists

Known colloquially as Eso's, or ETs, Esoteric Technologists have come to steal the status that benevolent magic users one had. Unlike mages, who had to be born with the gift of magic, Esoteric Technologists can come from any walk of life, but have to study very diligently and display a good degree of intelligence in order to qualify. They are able to build and use Magefire technology to thier advantage, and provide protection to individuals. The majority of Esos in Valon were trained by VEGA, and and as a result are contracted to serve the Empire in their career, though a few regard themselves as self taught and ply their trade freelance. These individuals tend to be looked down upon by those in the pay of the Empire. Most Esos regard magic with a sort of fascination, though it is one of scientific curiosity. They seek to control magic, to look upon it empirically, something that put them almost directly at odds with remaining magic users.

Many are content to simply build, though some Esoteric Technologists take a more active role. Using Magefire weaponry they are able to make themselves quite the force to be reckoned with in battle, though they tend to be in the minority. Most see direct combat as 'uncivilized' and would rather make Golems do their dirty work.

Flightships

One of the new methods of transport invented during the rise of technology. Powered by Magefire, they resemble ships of the sea, but with large, membraned wings, and propulsion which allows them to lift from the ground. These allow travel over long distances.

They are still very much a pursuit of the rich, however. Only nobility and some of the richer merchants can afford them for the most part. Some companies allow passage aboard a Flightship as a passenger for a fee, though the majority of ordinary individuals still travel by horse or by foot.

Magefire

The name given to magical energy when it had been extracted and refined. Magefire is used to power lights, heating, industrial machines, Flightships and golems among other things. It has been seen as one of the greatest advantages that the Empire has...though few are au fait with how Magefire is acquired. The power is obtained through an 'Esoteric Extractor' a machine which is capable of drawing the magical energy out of living things and converting it. The process itself is extremely painful and debilitating to the being subjected to it, tending to be ultimately fatal to the creature. As a result the source has been, for the most part, kept under wraps. The ETs have avoided using humanoid beings in the process out of concerns over the image problem it might create.

Mage

A mage is the name for an individual of a humanoid race whose body can manufacture magical energy. Superficially they tend to appear as a human, though they may have small quirks that mark them out as 'unusual'. Odd hair or eye colour, heterochromia or strange marks upon the skin can often be an indication of magical talent. Mages are very rare individuals. The trait has a chance of being inherited, so in times past the number of magic users was maintained by marriages in between mage family lines. This eventually backfired however, making many of those in later years shortlived and sickly. By the advent of Esoteric Technology, most of the mage families had all but died out, and the turn of public opinion agaisnt them caused the organizaed schools of magic to disband and scatter. As a result, a mage in Valon is a rare sight...and one that attracts a lot of attention.
They tend to be regarded with fear, for a mage's power unfettered can be incredibly destructive. Many of them are 'taken in' by the authority of the Empire at a young age, and raised and educated by them in order to ensure their loyalty...and in order to keep a very close eye on them. Some would be locked away if their power proved to be too uncontrolled, or their manner too unstable to be guaranteed safe.

The Order of the Dragon

The Order of the Dragon was a Valonian Order that was set-up centuries beforehand, when a pact was made with the Dragons of the Northern Mountains. It was agreed that the dragon elders would choose a small number of families from the humanoid races. These families would send forth one child each every generation, and that child would be paired with a dragon. Through a magical ceremony, thier spirits would be chained together through a psychic link, allowing them to speak to each other in thier minds, and feel the emotion of the other. It allowed for the best of both worlds. The comparative weakness of the humanoid was protected by the strength of the dragon, and the animal instinct and raw emotion of the dragon was tempered by the human-type's intellect. The dragon protected the rider, and the rider calmed the dragon. When the pairs came together they formed the Order of the Dragon, brought into being to tackle only the the worst, most openly dangerous threats to the Empire.

For centuries things seemed function well under that arrangement, that was until the final years of the old Emperor's reign. He disagreed with the then-leader of the Order, and, in his paranoia, he began to see them as a threat. The relationship was already shaky, but the rise of VEGA and the Esoteric Technologists sealed their doom. It was announced that they were outmoded, past thier time, that dragon-riders were no longer of use. Many of them took great offence, they left and disbanded. One, Maeve Winterborn and her dragon Rah'von, were not so quick to leave, hoping to persuade the new Empress to reconsider....but they were unfortunate to find that while rider were no longer seen as important in Valon...dragons were very much valued...as power sources.

Dragons

Dragons are large, rare reptilian creatures native to the northern areas of Valon. They vary a great deal in shape and colour, having a number of subspecies, though they are all quite distinct in that they possess a great deal of magical energy. This affords them a sort of psychic ability that allows them to bond with other beings. Despite this, dragons are not a civilized species, not in the same sense as humans or elves. They are often inteligent and wily, but they are beasts and prone to letting their instincts get the better of them. They can fly into rages that wreak terrible destruction on anything around them, and are voracious predators that have no distaste about laying into livestock unless controlled.

Since the advent of Esoteric Technology, dragons have become extremely valuable, though the dragon Rah'von is the only known draconic creature to have been successfully contained. Most quickly escape, or die in the escape attempt.

VEGA

An organization of Esoteric Technology research, backed by the Empress. Many inhabit the Palace, though they are based in Witchfell, a small town a few miles from the capital city. VEGA are at the cutting edge of Esoteric Technology, and dedicate themselves towards furthering the power of the Empire, and researching new ways of acquiring Magefire. The organization acts partly autonomously, though takes its orders from the Empress in theory. Many suspect they retain their own motives beyond public service however.

Most of what they research in Witchfell is kept top secret, to the degree that some are suspicious that what takes place there must be something sinister. Little is said on the matter on the part of those who are members.

Online medical help? Not so much. 95% of prostate cancer sites are ...

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - There's no shortage of websites with information on prostate cancer treatment, but they may be well beyond the average person's comprehension, a new study finds.

The study, of 62 such websites, found that only three had treatment information written below a 9th-grade reading level. Most often, sites aimed for the reading level of a high school senior - far beyond the reading skills of many Americans.

That's a worry, researchers say, because there is a range of treatment options for prostate cancer. And if men are going to make good choices, they need to understand the information out there.

Dr. Chandy Ellimoottil, who worked on the study, said he regularly asks newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients whether they've done any online research on their own, and what they've found.

"And I could tell from the conversations that they often really don't understand what they are reading," Ellimoottil said.

So he and his colleagues at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, decided to test the "readability" of websites with resources on prostate cancer treatment. They pulled information from 62 websites and used two standard tools that gauge how easy a text is to read.

They found that a 12th grade reading level was typical of the sites, and more than half required college-level reading skills to comprehend.

It's surprising that so many websites would be written at such a high level, according to Dr. Gopal Gupta, who also worked on the study.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends that written information for patients be at the 4th to 6th grade reading level, Gupta noted.

Yet none of the sites his team analyzed met that goal. And only a few were written at an 8th-grade reading level or below - even though that is the reading level of about one-third of Americans.

Gupta pointed out that even the patient education materials from the American Urological Association Foundation - the specialists who treat men with prostate cancer - were written at a college reading level.

He said the message for health professionals is to "look at your literature. Are patients really going to understand it?"

For now, Ellimoottil said there are some websites that are both trustworthy and relatively readable when it comes to prostate cancer treatment.

The NIH website MedlinePlus has information written at the 8th to 9th grade level (though that's still above the NIH's own recommendation). And the National Comprehensive Cancer Network gives information at about a 7th to 8th grade reading level.

And if you find information that you don't fully understand, you can print it out and bring it to your doctor to discuss, Ellimoottil said.

But always be wary of the source of that online information, cautioned Dr. Kerry L. Kilbridge, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Information from sponsored sites - those funded by drug companies or device makers - may be biased, said Kilbridge, who was not involved in the study.

"It's best to stick to vetted, unbiased sites like those maintained by the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society," Kilbridge said in an email.

Both Ellimoottil and Gupta agreed that skepticism is in order. And with prostate cancer, Gupta said, being well-informed is especially important because men often have a number of treatment options - and they are not necessarily easy to understand.

Prostate cancer is often slow-growing and may never progress to the point of threatening a man's life. In fact, about half of U.S. men diagnosed with prostate cancer fall into that "low risk" group, according to the National Cancer Institute.

"If you have low-risk disease," Gupta said, "you have four reasonable treatment options: active surveillance, surgery and two types of radiation therapy."

Active surveillance means delaying treatment and instead monitoring the cancer to see if it progresses. Many men balk at that, Gupta said. "They think, 'What do you mean you're not going to do anything? Get it (the cancer) out of me.'"

If men don't fully understand active surveillance, he noted, they may not choose it even if it's a good option for them.

Of course, there are other information sources than the Internet. Besides your own doctor, Kilbridge said, the National Cancer Institute has a toll-free number (1-800-4-CANCER) staffed by specialists who can help cancer patients get the information they need.

Windows Phone 8 Will Have 46 Of Top 50 Mobile Apps, Including One Year Of Ad-Free Pandora

wp10One of the major issues with the Windows Phone platform has always been a lack of apps. Microsoft argues quality over quantity, which is better for developers and consumers alike in terms of discoverability. But that's only if you can migrate from one platform to another without feeling like you're losing things. But with the newly announced apps on Windows Phone 8, new users should see all the same apps they've grown to know and love.

RolePlayGateway?

I'm searching for dedicated, friendly, patient, and if can, experienced people to join in my Gods of Elements: To Save Daughtris: Chapter 2. The RP isn't up yet. I'm just checking if anyone are interested.

http://www.roleplaygateway.com/roleplay/god-of-elements-to-save-daughtris/

I am the GM and I am the Dungeon Master. I expect many battles and drama. I will conjure monsters along the journey and role play as them. I shall role play as every NPC so that nobody knows what is going to happen in the future, thus maintaining the suspense of not knowing what is going to happen.

This is not a literacy role play. You don?t need to type long and lots of paragraph. Imagine yourself as the characters and write on how you?d react and wait for someone else to post. If a character interacted or asked you something, respond to it. Just write what your character would do and say. Role Play as your character.

When your character enters a new area, I shall write what your character will see because the stage is already set. You can add a little here and there but not too much.

In a battle between two people or more, of course a lot of times, nobody wants to be injured, so I shall throw a dice to determine the damage and post about what happens to everything. Don't worry, I'll be online frequently.

In battle, there is a system:

Each character can only make 2 actions in 1 turn which are:

- Attack

- Others: heal, cure, buff, change equipment, use item...

- defend/dodge,

- Charge,

Attack is to deal damage. If you attack someone, I shall roll a pair of six sided dices and determine the strength and effectiveness of your attack. For example if I roll a 12, then it?s 12 points damage, which is a critical damage

You can be creative with your character style of attack but you need to write the effect of your attack.

Example on how to write your character attacks someone:

A ran around B a quick as the speed of sound to disorient him. Suddenly, A jumped to the sky and kicked the air to propel her down, lunging at B with her spear, attempting to pierce through his helmet and skull which would kill or poison him.

Or

A quickly moved backwards, attempting to get away from B while shooting at him with her machine guns in both hands. A was aiming for B?s heart, an attack which would kill him instantly if hit directly, if it doesn?t, he will bleed and blood shall be pouring out nonstop.

Noticed I wrote status effect there?

You can only attack one person at a time.

Attack that poison, blind, curse, etcetera, shall be considered a negative status effect attack. To succeed a negative status effect attack, the damage points of an attack needs to be 6 or higher.

Negative status effects shall render the victim?s points to be decreased. Cure shall return the decreased points to normal. Cure and heal don't need dice rolls. They just succeed automatically. Buff actions shall increase the character?s points. Breaking someone?s buff or enchantment shall need to have 6 or more damage points to succeed.

Defend is to weaken a person's attack. Example:

When someone attacks you, I shall role a pair of dice. For instance the dices roll 12. If you don?t defend, the attack shall hit you a direct critical damage. If you decide to use one of your action on defend, I shall roll the pair of dice. For instance the dice roll for defend is 6, then its 12 - 6.

12 for the attack and 6 for defend, equaling it to 6 damage points. From what?s supposed to be a critical damage, it becomes an intermediate damage but negative status effect succeeded because the points are not less than 6. If it was less than 6, the negative status effect would fail.

But if the defend points is bigger than the attack points, there shall be no damage at all.

Example of Defending or Dodging:

B?s eyes were quick, he jumps back to dodge her attack. (From here you can continue on to your other action for example attacking). B quickly trusted his spear ahead to stab A when she lands, which would injure her.

What happens then, I shall write. The examples I am going to write are:

B didn?t leap quickly enough. A?s spear dug through his helmet, skull, and into his brain. B fell down on the ground with A?s spear still sticking in his head. B had died.

Or

A?s attack missed and struck her spear on the ground while B?s spear stab through her heart. A died instantly.

You can die without warning. Isn't that fun?

Charge is an action of sacrificing your turn to add + 12 points to the next turn but if anyone attacks you and gets a 6 or above, the charge shall be cancelled.

An attack or charge will be the end of a turn. You cannot charge then attack in 1 turn. You cannot attack then heal in one turn. You cannot attack and cast barriers to add to your defense in one turn. Remember, you only have 2 actions to do.

You can do other actions before attacking or charging.

There will be no time skips or time jumps because on episode 1 of Gods of Elements, there were some time skips that made the story disoriented. If you wish to time skip, please inform me and I shall work something out.

It seems that people prefer to have teleportation and summoning abilities so I?ll allow it but there is going to be a rule for it.

The rules for teleportation and summoning:

Summoning and teleporting is considered controlling the time and space. To control that, you need to manipulate and combine all the elements into one. So in order to use that ability, a lot of energy or a rare item is required.

You can only have your character teleported back to where he had placed a sigil. To place a sigil, someone will have to travel to that place first. You can summon things and people to your side but in a battle, you need to have a success charge to be able to use that ability.

Glanmire Phanter ? Performance Review - 2012

Glanmire Phanter is not a very consistent runner, but he has got a solid chance of making his team proud in the future, as he has got the tools to deliver positive results at the highest level against the best in the business.

Although, the young greyhound does not have a lot of experience, yet his performances in 2012 have clearly shown that he can take on anyone in the sport. He is learning the art of pressurising his opponents and will get better with the passage of time.

Speed is his strength, thus he likes running in shorter distance events. He has never been tested in a lengthy race, so there is a question mark over his stamina. At the moment, he is working really fine in his favourite format and will probably think of something else in the future.

The C. Lister?s trainee made his first appearance in March this year with a T3 event. The distance to cover for him back then was 435 metres and he did not really enjoy the conditions that time around.

Afterwards, he appeared in three back-to-back solo events over 245 metres and his team was confident that he had the speed to match his rivals in OR contests. However, his first outing in this class did not prove to be a very good one, as he suffered a humiliating defeat in it.

He was priced 6 to 1 back then and was up against some very good runners. He entered the event from trap number three, which meant that he had to deal with some crowd at the start. This was exactly what happened and he was put under immense pressure by his opponents.

The black dog was unable to trouble anyone and had to settle for fifth place in the end. It was probably too early to test him in this class, but he did not panic under pressure and gave some solid performances afterwards.

Killahan Phanter?s son kept on training hard in order to improve his performances and the results were positive for him. He has got a few OR victories now and seems to be confident enough to represent his team in some major events.

Real Estate ? Spaces: House is a shrine honoring Alamo

It?s easy to tell that Sarah Reveley is fascinated by the Alamo. Cabinets, walls and even the floor at her antique-filled Alamo Heights home are awash in plates, paintings, photos and sculptures representing the shrine.

It?s a lot to take in all at once, and Reveley has a background story for each of the pieces.

?I just love the Alamo, and I?m a plate collector, like my mother,? she says. ?I?m a sixth-generation Texan ? one of my maternal ancestors, Stephan Klein, was one of the founders of New Braunfels. He came over with Prince Solms in 1844, when Texas was still a republic.?

So it?s natural that she?d be fascinated by Texas history. What?s unusual is how much memorabilia, especially commemorative plates, she?s been able to fit into her home. Plates cover the walls in the living room, and other rooms have their share.

A number of plates were made for the Texas Centennial in 1936. She has one of the earliest designs, painted with portraits of Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston as well as scenes from the state?s history. Another plate, which depicts the Governor?s Mansion in Austin, was sold to help fund its upkeep.

She also has a commemorative plate from the Stephen F. Austin Hotel in Austin in 1924. Another plate honors the battle of Goliad with the legend, ?First shot fired for Texas Independence, 1835? painted around the edge.

While most of her plates were made in the United States, Reveley has a set of four painted with Alamo views that were created in Germany. A cream pitcher with the Alamo painted on it is Japanese lacquer ware. Another plate was made in Denmark.

?The Alamo is known around the world,? she says.

It?s not all plates, though. On top of a living room cabinet is a rack of collectable spoons, all depicting the Alamo. Several stereoscopes ? the Victorian version of 3-D ? show old photos of the Alamo. And a deck of miniature playing cards was purchased at the Alamo gift shop many years ago.

Artwork depicting the Alamo also decorates the walls. Reveley proudly shows a drawing from the Ladies Home Journal in 1921. Another was done by longtime Express-News artist Bob Dale. Yet another decorates an old menu from the Adolphus hotel in Dallas.

Reveley is especially fond of an Alamo painting by artist Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez, who was in her junior high school art class.

A good-size tin sculpture of the Alamo in front of the living room fireplace immediately draws a visitor?s eye.

?I found it in a junk shop when I went to Brazoria for their 175th anniversary,? she recalls.

Reveley also has a pair of Alamo bookends. There?s even an Alamo birdhouse in the enclosed back porch she uses as an office.

It?s taken Reveley years to amass her collection, which she eventually would like to donate to a museum. But in the meantime, she enjoys owning it and showing it to visitors.

?I love my collections because everything I own has a story to it,? she says.

Another voice has joined a growing chorus seeking to consolidate court operations in?New Orleans, in this case by merging Traffic Court into Municipal Court. A city-commissioned report released Friday argues?for streamlining?the city's balkanized?court system in part through the proposed merger.

The report by?The PFM Group, based in Philadelphia,?is the bookend to a report released two weeks ago, commissioned by Chief Administrative Officer Andy Kopplin, that found "highly fragmented" and low-tech coordination among public safety agencies in the city.

That finding was no surprise to anyone familiar with the criminal justice system in New Orleans, which is split in more pieces?than in any parish in the state. It's also severely antiquated, the first?report found, with paper record-keeping, hard-copy calendars, handwritten summonses and other pre-tech systems.

The follow-up report notes that New Orleans, with separate municipal, traffic and city courts, has more separate?judicial systems than any parish in Louisiana. It says a total staff of more than 450 employees could be reduced by 25 percent through a merger and other measures.

The study ranks Traffic Court as the most bloated, with more than 21 full-time positions for each of the four judges, compared with 20.5 in Criminal District Court and about a dozen for each judge in Juvenile and Municipal courts.

Despite relying on fines and fees for itself, and to funnel into city coffers and other state-mandated?programs such as public defense, Traffic Court has no formal program?to collect fines, the report found.

The report's top recommendation is to create a single Municipal Court "that hears misdemeanors, ordinance violations and traffic cases." It encourages city officials to seek state legislation to eliminate Traffic Court.

A?merger of Traffic and Municipal courts appears to be gaining a head of political steam, even from within. Robert Jones, the chief administrative judge at Traffic Court, said late Friday that he's open to the move.

"I do agree that from the standpoint of economies of scale, the merger of those two courts would save money and make sense from a financial standpoint," Jones said. "It's just in line with the other parishes in the state. Misdemeanor and traffic court matters are adjudicated in the same courthouse by the same judges."

Jones said the study misstates personnel figures for Traffic Court; the number of Traffic Court employees is not the 86 positions that the study counts, but 71, he said. The court, he said, has been trying to streamline.

Still, he said a merger would make sense, in part because both courts need to bring their case management systems into the 21st century and could do it together. "It can't be done overnight. It needs to be thought out. There are logistical nightmares that await," Jones said. "There would be positions that would have to be eliminated. I would be willing to sit down and discuss it."

Jones said he's "gotten word from City Hall that this is something that they would like to see accomplished."

Ryan Berni, a spokesman for Mayor Mitch Landrieu's office, said the study?should help?spur?reforms across the criminal justice system.? "It's fair to say the PFM report represents a good point of departure for some very serious conversations that need to held by all partners in the criminal justice system so that it improves its efficiency and coordination and keeps the people of New Orleans safe," he said in an e-mail. "The status quo has not been effective nor financially sustainable, so changes must occur."

The elimination of judges, as opposed to court staff through a merger, could prove more challenging; it may require statewide legislation that could jeopardize judgeships elsewhere in the state. "That's a matter that's being debated and discussed and analyzed by the (Supreme Court) judicial council. I'm going to defer to them," Jones said.

The study released Friday also recommends eliminating magistrate commissioner positions in Criminal District Court, or leaving them unfilled, citing the recent shift of thousands of misdemeanor cases to Municipal Court.

There appears to be?far?less?political momentum behind that move.

New Orleans Traffic Court has come under intensive fire over the last year. In a scathing report last year, Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux's office cited the court for stealing money from the city and other agencies, misstating its revenue, paying full-time salaries and benefits to part-time judges and employees, and letting a contract accountant charge more than $600,000 in 2010 while also serving as the campaign treasurer for a sitting judge.

A Times-Picayune report found that the court's contract accountant, Vandale Thomas, pocketed more than $1.2 million in less than three years from checks written by Jones and the three other Traffic Court judges.

Quatrevaux's?report also said that four traffic court judges were far too many, given the paltry number of trials that take place there. Quatrevaux's office figured on a $2.5 million savings by merging Traffic Court into Municipal Court.

Jones also said Quatrevaux's office is in the process of re-auditing the court. "Traffic Court is ready to be reviewed," Jones said. "We think the measures we've taken and implemented have been responsive to his report outlining our deficits."

The merger talk comes with some dubious political precedent. A post-Katrina plan to combine the Orleans Parish civil, criminal and juvenile courts,?as well as the two elected clerks that manage case files, found footing in 2006 legislation but has since been scrapped.

Jones said a merger of Traffic and Municipal courts may come easier, since they both occupy the same building.

Among other points, the new study recommended:

? Creating a single office of judicial administration to manage all of the courts.

? Better organization and cataloging of evidence at Tulane and Broad.

? A detailed study of court security services provided by Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman's office, which received $2.5 million last year for criminal court services and security at Traffic and Municipal courts.

? New strategies to reduce case processing times.

? Expanding diversion programs to include both lower-level and more serious offenders.

The first part of the study noted a sprawling criminal justice system in the city that employs 3,200 people in agencies that are entirely self-contained, rarely share their data and keep tight control over their own budgets.

The city spent $181.3 million in 2010 on criminal justice, 71 percent of which went to the NOPD alone.

The overall criminal justice budget in the city stands at about $300 million a year, the study found, including local, state and federal revenue along with grants and fines and fees from criminal defendants and traffic scofflaws.

The city spent $90,000 on the two reports.
