Drake Leads At BET Awards With 12 Nominations

The BET Awards should be called the Drake Awards.

The rapper-singer is up for 12 honors, including five nominations for video of the year, which has 10 nominees.

His own hits ? "Started from the Bottom" and "HYFR" ? are up for the top prize, as well as his guest appearances on 2 Chainz's "No Lie," A$AP Rocky's "(Expletive) Problems" and Kendrick Lamar's "Poetic Justice." Other video of the year nominees are Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," Rihanna's "Diamonds," "Adorn" by Miguel, Kanye West's "Mercy" and "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

While 26-year-old Drake is mostly battling himself for the night's top award ? to air live Sunday from the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live ? some of his friends (and enemies) will blaze the stage, including Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown, who is nominated for best male R&B artist. Minaj, who has won best female hip-hop artist for three consecutive years, is up for the honor again with little competition.

But the animated rapper isn't the only diva taking the stage: Mariah Carey is also set to sing her latest single, "(hash)Beautiful," with Miguel.

Justin Timberlake, who has four nominations including best male R&B artist and best collaboration for "Suit & Tie" with Jay-Z, will also perform. Other performers include Stevie Wonder, R. Kelly, India.Arie, Ciara and Robin Thicke, who's "Blurred Lines" is spending its third week on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

2 Chainz and Lamar, who had a breakthrough this year with his critically acclaimed major label debut, "good kid, m.A.A.d city," follow Drake with eight nominations each.

Timberlake, Drake, Lamar, Rocky, Miguel and Rihanna will compete for the fan-voted viewer's choice award. Charlie Wilson will earn the lifetime achievement award and Dwyane Wade, who recently won the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat, will receive the humanitarian award.

Chris Tucker will host the awards show, and presenters include Jamie Foxx, Angela Bassett, Paula Patton and Gabrielle Union.

Sunday's BET Awards is the last part of the network's three-day, weekend event dubbed "BET Experience at L.A. Live." It kicked off Friday with a Beyonce concert, and other performers throughout the weekend included Miguel, The Jacksons and R. Kelly.

VIP wedding to celebrate gays' big day

Auckland will put on VIP treatment for one of the first gay marriages in New Zealand - officials are even donating use of The Cloud for the reception.

A public vote will decide which of five couples will celebrate their wedding and reception in spectacular style.

The ZM radio station is billing it as "the most fabulous gay wedding ever", and will name one couple each day this week.

The winners of the public vote will be announced on July 26, and they will marry at 8am on the day the Marriage Amendment Act comes into effect, August 19.

And what a wedding it will be. The ceremony is at St Matthew in the City Anglican church. Traffic engineers will then give the couple VIP treatment, ensuring every traffic light is green for them as their horse and carriage makes its way to the waterfront for a reception at The Cloud on Queens Wharf.

Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development is giving the winning couple a surprise "Auckland Destination" package. Chief executive Brett O'Riley said the city was supporting same-sex marriage.

If Auckland wanted to be the most liveable city in the world, he said, it was important to embrace every aspect of a modern society.

However, Anglican Church hierarchy have not yet agreed to ministers celebrating same-sex marriages, so the couple will not be allowed to sign the wedding register in the church ceremony.

New Android apps worth downloading: Google Search and RoadNinja updates, Slambots

We've got two big updates to kick off Apps Worth Downloading today, and they're both great for summer travel. Google Search is up first, bringing the information of the Internet to you in quick, easy searches, and which has been updated with new features from Google Offers and more. RoadNinja is our second updated app, and its ability to tell you what's coming in the next exit on the highway (and where you might stop for food, restrooms or great deals) has been improved with a newly strengthened search algorithm. Finally, we've got SlamBots to while away the hours in the car, an arcade title in which you jump up the screen and then come slamming back down on the heads of your enemies.

Google SearchWhat?s it about? Search the Internet with a number of quick, easy options with Google's dedicated Search app.

What?s cool? Finding information from the Internet when you're out and about can be frustrating, which is what makes Google Search so handy. The app makes searching for the exact information you need as easy as possible, offering the ability to use text-based or voice-based searches and personalizing your results based on your location. Google has just updated the app to be even more powerful, throwing in a link between Search and Google Offers to help you quickly find places use coupons and save money. You can also activate music from your library or the Google Play Store with voice commands, sync up with your Google connected TV for help in show-related search results, and more.

Who?s it for? This is a must-have app. If you never need information while you're out, Google Search is invaluable.

What?s it like? Apps like Evi and Iris are also great at finding information with little work from the user.

RoadNinjaWhat?s it about? Travel app RoadNinja clues you in on what's coming down the road to help with bathroom breaks, food stops and more.

What?s cool? Road trips are great ? until the inevitable moment when you're on the highway and in unfamiliar territory, wishing you'd downed one fewer latte before setting out. RoadNinja helps make trips better, though, by providing tons of information about where you are and what's coming in the next exit. You can use the app to find food stops and gas, and maybe most importantly, public restrooms. The app also does cool things like let you compare gas prices nearby and find local promotions as you pass, to help you determine where to stop. The latest update to RoadNinja introduces a new layout to the app, and adds a new, stronger search algorithm to make results even more reliable and useful.

Who?s it for? If you're traveling on the road in America, RoadNinja is an app you'll want with you.

What?s it like? Check out YP Local Search & Gas Prices and Tripit for additional trip-planning and road info.

SlamBotsWhat?s it about? It's all about smashing stuff in arcade title SlamBots, in which players pilot a spiky-bottomed vehicle and crush robots.

What?s cool? SlamBots is like a vertical scrolling title, but without the scrolling. Players bounce around platforms, moving vertically in different arenas, but the goal is to get up above enemies and drop on them by touching the screen to ?slam.? Moving around the screen is done with tilt controls, making SlamBots a fast-action arcade title that'll have you carefully tilting to avoid obstacles and bring serious pain against enemies. You'll also grab power-ups along the way to strengthen your slambot and rack up higher scores.

Who?s it for? Fans of quick, fun points-based arcade games should check out SlamBots.

What?s it like? Velocispider is another great title with similarities in looks and mechanics, and Hyper Jump will scratch the itch to jump ever higher.

NY ex-lawyer in terror case must remain in prison

NEW YORK (AP) ? A former New York lawyer convicted in a terrorism case says her request for early release from a 10-year prison sentence to fight cancer has been rejected.

Lynne Stewart said in a statement to supporters this week that she was "disappointed but not devastated" by a Federal Bureau of Prisons letter. She said it was flawed factually and medically.

Stewart has said medical authorities at the Federal Medical Center Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas, recommended her for compassionate release. The program permits early release for "extraordinary and compelling reasons." She said the warden then forwarded the application to Washington.

The 73-year-old Stewart was sentenced on a charge of conspiracy to provide support to terrorist organizations.

A Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman said she can't comment for privacy reasons about individual inmates.

Ex-Conn. church leader sentenced for fraud

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- A former Trumbull church leader has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison for a scheme that authorities say defrauded investors of nearly $500,000.

Federal prosecutors said Julius C. Blackwelder of North Dakota, formerly of Stratford, was sentenced Thursday in New Haven to 46 months in prison for wire fraud and money laundering offenses.

Blackwelder was bishop of the Bridgeport ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Authorities say the 59-year-old Blackwelder misled investors including church members by saying he would invest their money in safe, long-term commodities futures contracts and, in some cases, guaranteeing a specific return on investment. Prosecutors say he used the money to pay back earlier investors, build himself a waterfront house in Stratford and repay personal bank loans.

Blackwelder sought 18 months, promising to make amends.

Will.i.am says Pharrell's trademark is too similar

NEW YORK (AP) ? Will.i.am says a trademark Pharrell's company tried to register is too similar to his "I AM" trademark.

Will.i.am has owned the "I AM" trademark since 2001. He filed oppositions in March and May against Pharrell's company, i am OTHER. It launched in 2010.

In a statement Thursday, will.i.am's attorney Ken Hertz says trademark lawyers for will.i.am and Pharrell "discussed the matter for several months." He says because of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's deadlines, will.i.am "had no choice but to lodge his objection at the time he did."

Hertz says the lawyers for the musicians first spoke in December.

Pharrell says in a statement he's "disappointed" and "surprised" by will.i.am's opposition.

Will.i.am uses "I AM" for a number of his businesses, including his charity foundation I AM ANGEL.

Taliban attack presidential palace in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban militants with false papers and military-style uniforms bluffed their way through two checkpoints on their way to Afghanistan's presidential palace Tuesday before jumping out of their explosives-packed vehicle and opening fire on security personnel, according to Afghan officials and eyewitness accounts.

Another carload of Taliban fighters got stuck between two checkpoints and detonated their own car bomb.

The Taliban said all eight of its fighters died in the attack. Authorities reported one security guard wounded in the gunfight and had no word on casualties from the vehicle explosion.

The well-planned daylight assault in a highly fortified zone of the capital is a brazen challenge to Kabul's authority only a week after NATO formally handed over security for the entirety of the country to Afghan forces.

The gunbattle was witnessed by a group of journalists who were waiting to enter the palace grounds for a news event on Afghan youth at which President Hamid Karzai was expected to talk about ongoing efforts to open peace talks with the Taliban.

The palace is in a large fortified area of downtown Kabul that also includes the U.S. Embassy and the headquarters for the NATO-led coalition forces and access is heavily restricted. Some Kabul residents initially thought the gunfire was a coup attempt because the idea of a Taliban attack within the security zone seemed so unlikely.

The attackers were stopped in Ariana Square, at least 500 meters (yards) and several checkpoints away from the palace itself. It was unclear where Karzai was at the time.

The gunbattle started around 6:30 a.m. near the east gate leading to the palace next to the Afghan Ministry of Defense and the former Ariana Hotel, which former U.S. intelligence officials have confirmed is used by the CIA.

Kabul police chief Gen. Mohamad Ayub Salangi said the gunmen jumped out of their SUV and opened fire after being stopped by security forces while trying to use fake documents to get through a checkpoint. All gunmen were killed, and one palace security guard was wounded, he said.

The car bomb then exploded as it tried to enter the area. About 20 journalists waiting to attend Karzai's press event took cover behind a religious shrine, pulling a schoolboy off the street who had been caught in the open on his way to school, as the gunmen in camouflage uniforms exited their black Land Cruiser.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility, saying in an emailed statement that "eight of our suicide bombers were able to reach the most secure area of Kabul," identifying them by name and saying they were carrying hand grenades, a machinegun and rocket-propelled grenades.

"The brave mujahedeen, with special tactics and help from inside, were able to reach their target with their weapons and cars," he said. He said their targets were the CIA building, the palace and the Defense Ministry and claimed "a number of foreign invaders were killed and wounded in the attack."

Smoke could be seen coming from the area of the hotel, but there was no immediate indication any of the buildings were hit in the attack and Afghanistan's Kabul division army commander Gen. Kadam Shah Shahim said he knew of no deaths among security forces or civilians.

The NATO-led coalition in Afghanistan instituted a camp lockdown during the incident and said in a short statement that its forces had been ready to assist but were not called in by Afghan authorities.

The U.S. Embassy cancelled all consular appointments and advised American citizens in Kabul to stay indoors.

Ambassador James Cunningham condemned the attack, and extended U.S. "condolences to all Afghans affected by these senseless acts."

"All of the attackers were killed, without success in achieving their goals ? This again demonstrates the futility of the Taliban's efforts to use violence and terror to achieve their aims," he said in a statement. "We again call on the Taliban to come to the table to talk to the Afghanistan government about peace and reconciliation."

The Taliban have indicated they are willing to open peace talks with the U.S. and the Afghanistan government and just last week opened an office in Qatar for possible negotiations.

But at the same time they have not renounced violence and attacks have continued across Afghanistan.

In the southern province of Kandahar, a minibus hit a bomb buried in the road, killing 11 members of a family, said Kandahar governor's spokesman Ahmad Jawed Faisal. Faisal said the dead included eight women, two children and a man, and two other men were also wounded.

In Oruzgan, the province north of Kandahar, provincial governor's spokesman Abdullah Hemat said Tuesday that six Afghan national police were killed the day before when their patrol was attacked with a roadside bomb.

(AP) ? Brad Pitt is getting his action franchise, after all.

A person close to Pitt's "World War Z" told The Associated Press on Monday that Paramount Pictures is likely to develop a sequel to the apocalyptic zombie thriller. The person was not authorized to announce the plans and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"World War Z," based on Max Brooks' novel, was always intended to spawn a trilogy for Pitt, who stars as a United Nations inspector. But that seemed in doubt when the film ran significantly over budget and was forced to reshoot its ending.

But the film opened strongly over the weekend, earning $66.4 million domestically and another $45.8 million internationally. That put it on course to easily recoup its production budget of about $200 million.

The Giant Catfish is an enormous fish with thin, down-turned lips that give it a lonely look. And such a "mournful" visage is not unwarranted.

Already one of the most endangered fish in the world, a new study has found that a dam under way in Laos could push it to extinction.?

So rare that it is nearly a legend of the Mekong River?s depths, the Giant Catfish belongs to the?shark catfish family and reach more than 600 pounds and some 10 feet in length. The Brobdingnagian?fish has dwindled in number an estimated 90 percent over the past 20 years ??possibly to just a few hundred animals, though tracking the elusive fish is difficult. It is now found only in the lower Mekong, which runs like a mud-colored vein carrying the economic lifeblood of Southeast Asia through Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. In recent years, though, progress had been made in rescuing Giant Catfish fish from extinction, as those five countries introduced new protections that banned fishing it.

Now, Laos's controversial Xayaburi Dam threatens to undo that.

?The Giant Catfish is endangered, but there?s still a chance for it, and all the countries involved have gotten on board to restrict fishing ? but just when we solved one problem we?re now facing this new one,? says Zeb Hogan, the?study?s author and associate research professor at the University of Nevada,?in a telephone interview.

The Xayabari, the first dam in the lower Mekong, will, if finished, block the Giant Catfish from making its lifecycle migration from the floodplain rearing areas to upstream spawning sites in northern Laos and Thailand, the study said. The dam could also alter Mekong flows, disrupting the natural cues the fish needs to spawn.

This is not the first warning that the Xayabari project could mean the end for the Giant Catfish. Two years ago, the Mekong River Commission???an advisory body established in 1995 as part of an agreement between five Southeast Asian countries on the development of the Mekong ??convened a panel of experts who concluded that the dam would obstruct the migrations of some 23 to 100 species of fish, including the Great Catfish. The panel recommended a 10-year hold on the Xayaburi project, pending more information on how the dam would affect the river?s ecology.

"The gaps in knowledge on the number of migratory fish species, their biomass and their ability to successfully pass a dam and reservoir leads to considerable uncertainty about the scale of impact on fisheries and associated livelihoods, both locally and in a transboundary context," the report said.

But in November 2012, Laos officially began what is expected to be seven years of construction of the Xayabari Dam, the first in several controversial dams planned for the lower Mekong.?

Whither Snowden? NSA whistleblower skips Moscow-Havana flight

Fleeing National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden pulled a vanishing act in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport Monday by failing to show up for an Aeroflot flight to Havana that he was booked on ? sending a planeload of frustrated Moscow-based journalists off for an unplanned vacation in Cuba.

Russia's national airline Aeroflot had confirmed Monday that Mr. Snowden was booked to fly to Cuba on a regular flight leaving Monday afternoon. But as the plane's doors closed and he was still a no-show, reporters for major news outlets who'd scrambled to buy tickets for the flight in hopes of talking with the elusive whistleblower tweeted photos of his empty seat and resigned themselves to an unwanted twelve-and-a-half hour flight.

Russian news services had reported that Snowden arrived in Moscow Sunday aboard an Aeroflot flight from Hong Kong. An unidentified Aeroflot source told journalists that he and his companion, WikiLeaks official Sarah Harrison, spent the night in the "capsule" hotel Vozdushni Express inside Sheremetyevo's transit area. Reporters saw the ambassador of Ecuador, the country to which Snowden has applied for asylum, arrive and go inside the transit zone. But there have been no independently confirmed sightings of Snowden himself.

RECOMMENDED: Do you know anything about Russia? A quiz.

Though Snowden himself remains invisible, Ecuador's foreign minister, Ricardo Patino Arocam, read out a statement from him ? reported by the Guardian ? in which he compares himself with Bradley Manning, the former US army private currently on trial for handing hundreds of thousands of classified US documents to WikiLeaks.

"Manning has been subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment. The trial of Bradley Manning is taking place now and secret witnesses have been summoned to court and secret documents have been submitted," Snowden is quoted as saying in defense of his decision to seek asylum in Ecuador.

"I think that because of the circumstances it is unlikely that I will have a fair trial or humane treatment before trial, and also I have the risk of life imprisonment or death," he added.

The apparent news that Snowden might still be in Russia could energize efforts by Washington to convince Russia to give him over, despite the fact that Russia and the US have no mutual extradition treaty.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in several statements to the Russian media, has insisted that President Vladimir Putin has no knowledge of Snowden's whereabouts or interest in his itinerary. "Overall, we have no information about [Snowden]," he told the independent Interfax agency Monday.

Overnight, the US appealed urgently to Russia to see Snowden as an acid test of partnership and the security cooperation Moscow has been hoping to get from the US in advance of the upcoming Sochi Winter Games.

"Given our intensified cooperation after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of working with Russia on law enforcement matters ? including returning numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government ? we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged," US National Security Council Spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.

Speaking to journalists during a visit to New Delhi Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry suggested that the episode is likely to damage US relations with both Russia and China if they should prove to have been officially involved in his flight.

"It would be deeply troubling, obviously, if they [Russia and China] had adequate notice, and notwithstanding that, they make the decision willfully to ignore that and not live by the standards of the law," news agencies quoted Mr. Kerry as saying.

"As a result there would be without any question some effect and impact on the relationship and consequences," he said.

Russian experts say it's highly unlikely that Snowden boarded an Aeroflot plane, without a valid US passport, and flew to Moscow without at least the acquiescence of the Kremlin.

"I'm pretty sure this could not have taken place without some level of involvement on the part of Russian and Chinese authorities," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow-based foreign policy journal.

"Russia can resist pressure, and that's why he's here in safety. But I don't think Russia wants to keep him, even if [the Kremlin] has suggested that it would be open to that. It's one thing to show that we can't be pushed around, and quite another to have this as a permanent headache in our relations with the US," he says.

Alexei Pushkov, the chair of the State Duma's international affairs committee, told journalists Monday that the US should stop posing as the offended party, in light of the recent "red-handed" capture of an alleged CIA agent in downtown Moscow and disclosures by Snowden that the NSA and its British counterpart tried to listen to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's phone calls during a G-20 summit in London in 2009.

"I think we should be guided by our own understanding of what we should do. We do not see any special restraint on the part of U.S. special services with regards to Russia," Mr. Pushkov told Interfax.

"If Snowden were the only problem upsetting perfect relations between Russia and the US, that would be one thing," says Alexei Makarkin, director of the independent Center for Political Technologies in Moscow.

"But as things stand now, we have different positions on all the key issues of world politics. Russia is extremely disenchanted with the US and given up all hopes of building normal relations with it. So, why would Russia trouble itself over threats that this Snowden case might worsen our ties with Washington?" he adds.

The trial of James "Whitey" Bulger enters its third week Monday with more testimony from prosecution witnesses. Bulger is accused in a 32-count racketeering indictment of a long list of crimes, including participating in 19 killings. Here are some highlights from the courtroom last week:

THE DEFENDANT

The 83-year-old Bulger took notes on a legal pad and stared straight ahead during testimony. Bulger, whom prosecutors say is the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, was one of the nation's most wanted fugitives after he fled Boston in 1994. He was captured in 2011 in Santa Monica, Calif. His early image as a modern-day Robin Hood who gave Thanksgiving dinners to working-class neighbors and kept drug dealers out of his South Boston neighborhood was shattered when authorities started digging up bodies.

THE PROSECUTION

Former hit man James Martorano testified about murders he said he committed at the request of Bulger and Bulger's partner, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi. Martorano also described a 1975 killing he said Bulger and Flemmi did themselves. Martorano, who admitted killing 20 people, spoke in a clipped, businesslike manner while describing how he pumped bullets into people and shot up cars, but he said Bulger and Flemmi "sort of broke my heart" when he learned they had been FBI informants. Prosecutors also called to the stand family members of people they say were killed by Bulger and his gang and others who survived the attacks. The government also began the process of introducing Bulger's FBI informant file into evidence. The prosecution says Bulger was a longtime informant who provided the FBI with information on the rival New England Mafia; Bulger's lawyers deny he was an informant.

THE DEFENSE

Under cross-examination by Bulger lawyer Hank Brennan, Martorano insisted he was not a hit man or a serial killer. He said he did not get paid for killing people but instead just did it as part of his work for Bulger's gang, to help family or friends, or to defend himself. "I always tried to be a nice guy," he said. The defense asked prosecution witness Ralph DeMasi if during his time in prison, he learned that inmates who become government witnesses know they can get "extraordinary benefits," an obvious reference to plea deals struck by Martorano and other Bulger associates expected to testify against him. "Absolutely," DeMasi said. "Guys are walking the street after they killed 20 people, if they cooperated." Martorano served 12 years in prison after cutting a deal with prosecutors to testify against Bulger.

Bulger's defense attorneys filed a motion Saturday asking Judge Denise J. Casper to lift a gag order because it is infringing on Bulger's Constitutional right of free speech. They cited "personal attacks" against their client in the media and "an enormous degree of media attention and public discourse."

Prosecutors responded Sunday that Bulger is free to tell his story by testifying. They noted that Bulger spent considerable time before the trial trying to bar some reporters from the courtroom.

It was not clear when Casper would rule on the request.

THE JURY

Eleven men and seven women are serving on the jury, which includes six alternates. The trial is expected to last three to four months.

THE GALLERY

Academy Award winner Robert Duvall sat in the back of the courtroom Friday. The 82-year-old Duvall has had a long TV and film career, including starring roles in "The Godfather" and "The Godfather: Part II." In those mob epics, he played Tom Hagen, a lawyer and adviser to the Corleone family. He has been shooting a movie, "The Judge," in Shelburne, Mass., this month. Duvall plays the title character in the film.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

Former Boston FBI Agent John Morris is expected to testify Monday. Morris was the supervisor of John Connolly, who prosecutors say was Bulger's handler as an FBI informant. Morris, who was granted immunity from prosecution, has admitted he accepted cash from Bulger's gang.

New poll shows growing Arab trust in regional press

A poll by Northwestern in Qatar, due out tomorrow, shows growing trust in regional news outlets across the Arab world.

By Ariel Zirulnick,?Staff writer / June 17, 2013

Palestinian journalists are seen through a glass window at the offices of the Arabic news channel Al Jazeera in the West Bank city of Ramallah July 2009. Arabs say the quality of their regional media is on the rise, led by Al Jazeera, which is making inroads in the US as its profile soars, a new poll shows.

According to a sweeping Arab world public opinion survey by Northwestern University in Qatar that will be released tomorrow, 61 percent of respondents said that the "quality of reporting in the Arab world" has improved in the last two years. But while regional media basks in goodwill, less than half of respondents (48 percent) consider their own country's media credible and only 43 percent say the media can report without interference.

Twenty-six percent of respondents ranked Al Jazeera as their top news source. Broadcaster Al Arabiya trailed at 15 percent. After that, news consumption fragments to a handful of international and local news organizations.?

Northwestern in Qatar's first major regional survey since opening its doors in 2008, polled roughly 1,250 people each in eight countries (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates) on issues of the Internet and the media in the Arab world. The findings will be presented at the International Communications Association conference in London tomorrow. (Editor's note: The paragraph has been edited to make clear that 1,250 people were surveyed in each of the eight countries.)

Northwestern in Qatar receives funding from the Qatar Foundation, founded by Qatar's ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, who also funds Al Jazeera.

Everette Dennis, dean and CEO of Northwestern in Qatar, said that he has seen the regional media improve by leaps. Major broadcast networks like Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya are "doing a more detailed job of covering their own region" and "Some of the newspapers that were more kept cats or very cautious, subsidized media, are doing a better job, a more transparent job."

What propelled them forward may have been the arrival of hordes of members of the international media during the Arab uprisings, which exposed regional and local journalists to high-quality coverage on a part of the world they knew well, Mr. Dennis says.

"When you see outsiders doing a better job covering your region than yourself, that's embarrassing," he says.?

Puff pieces

Even before then business magazines, which used to be filled with press releases and "self-serving puffery" had become more critical, he says.?The wealthier Arab countries are becoming much more a part of the global economy, but they couldn't be there if their business publications were not publishing more accurate information, he says.?

The survey also shed light on the region's complicated opinions on freedom of expression.?Sixty-one percent of respondents agreed with the statement "It is okay for people to express their ideas on the Internet, even if they are unpopular," but?less than half (46 percent) think they should be able to criticize their government online.?

While people in the region may agree with freedom of expression on the internet in the abstract, practically speaking many support greater regulation. Half (51%) of the participants in the study believe there is not enough awareness of the ?laws, regulations and moralities that control one?s activities on the internet?, and, perhaps consequently, half (50%) also feel the internet in their country should be more tightly regulated than it is now.

Perhaps even more telling, only 16% overall disagree that the internet in their country should be more tightly regulated, ranging from a low of 7 percent disagreement in Egypt to a high of just 25 percent disagreeing in Bahrain. These low levels of disagreement suggest that there is no strong opposition to internet regulation in any of the eight countries under study.

"There is a paradox between?people saying they wanted almost absolute freedom of expression online ... and at the same time saying there ought to be regulation in some instances," says Dennis.?

While poll respondents often favor something in the abstract, when it is brought down to a personal level the answer often changes, he says. And it comes down to more than that in this region, he says.?

"The meaning is much deeper in the Arab world," he says. "I?think it's a tension between tradition and modernity."

"The younger, presumably more modern people do tend to favor almost unlimited expression online. They say ?Let it rip.? ? Their?parents, people who are older, tend to say yes, there should be a lot more freedom, but not in the case of criticizing Islam, for example.?

The survey did not include followup questions that allowed the university to get at the root of the contradictions; Dennis says they plan to explore it in a future survey.

An interactive website with the full survey results can be found at?menamediasurvey.northwestern.edu.

Pentagon flash drive ban has many exceptions

By David Alexander

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon has granted many exceptions, possibly numbering in the thousands, to allow staff members who administer secure computer networks to use flash drives and other portable storage devices, department spokesmen say.

The exceptions to policies barring the use of such devices could make it easier for rogue employees to remove sensitive documents. But officials say waivers go to people who update software and run helpdesk services for the Pentagon's vast computer network and are needed to run the system efficiently.

The U.S. government's handling of sensitive documents has come under scrutiny since Edward Snowden, a systems administrator for a contractor with the National Security Administration, copied classified materials at a Hawaii installation and leaked them to the news media.

Snowden used a simple flash drive to store the materials, according to a government source close to the investigation.

Storage devices have been a concern at the Defense Department since the 2008 Buckshot Yankee incident, in which a malicious software worm known as agent.btz was uploaded to military networks by a thumb drive.

Then-Deputy Secretary Bill Lynn declassified the incident in 2010 and U.S. Cyber Command, which was established in the wake of Buckshot Yankee, banned the devices.

About that same time, according to prosecutors, Private Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence analyst, copied thousands of documents onto CDs and a digital camera card and leaked them to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks.

Since then, the Pentagon has bolstered efforts to prevent removal of classified data, Lieutenant Colonel James Gregory said. The department is in 100 percent compliance with directives to disable or tightly control use of removable media devices on the Pentagon's secure network, he said.

That means most users have restricted profiles and their computers do not recognize flash drives and other devices, like BlackBerrys, that may be plugged into USB ports, Pentagon spokesmen say.

The different military branches also have established programs to control and track personnel authorized to download data from the secure network, they say. Automatic systems instantly report if someone connects an unauthorized device, or inappropriately uses credentials for accessing the system.

While use of flash drives is largely barred, exceptions are granted to systems administrators who install software and manage helpdesk services for the department's millions of computers and nearly 600,000 mobile devices in some 15,000 networked groups.

Lieutenant Colonel Damien Pickart, a Pentagon spokesman, said the department was unable to specify how many exceptions had been given because authority is delegated to smaller units within the service and is not tracked at the department level.

Given the size of the system, it could be in the thousands, he said.

Steven Bucci, a former Pentagon official and now a cyber security expert for the conservative Heritage Foundation think-tank, said a computer network the size of the Pentagon's needed a large number of administrators at different levels to run efficiently.

Concentrating access and control in the hands of a small number of people could create even bigger risks if one of the trusted few decided to divulge information, he added, because they would have been exposed to a wider array of information.

"There is a certain point where you have to start trusting people and that becomes a very imperfect system," he said. "If you have a malicious insider - someone who has the authority to do stuff but then decides to violate the rules - you've got a problem, and there's ... very little you can do to stop that."

Decisions on who gets waivers are made by colonels or generals who have been granted that authority for their installations, brigades or other units, Pentagon officials said.

The Pentagon declined to comment on Snowden's case, citing an ongoing criminal investigation.

Bucci said that after the Manning case, the Pentagon tightened network security about as far as it could.

"What it comes down to then is the leadership, trying to watch your people, listen for those signals," he said. "But, heck, I mean even if you've got the best, most competent leaders and supervisors in the world, sometimes you're still going to miss those people."

Gold, Silver, Stocks, Bonds Plunge On Fed Noise And China Debt ...

Global Financial and Commodity Market Forecasts 2013

Commodities / Gold and Silver 2013 Jun 20, 2013 - 04:14 PM GMT

By: GoldCore

Commodities

Today?s AM fix was USD 1,303.25, EUR 986.34 and GBP 842.38 per ounce.
Yesterday?s AM fix was USD 1,366.00, EUR 1,019.86 and GBP 874.91 per ounce.

Gold fell $16.10 or 1.18% yesterday and closed at $1,351.00/oz. Silver sank to $21.25 and ended down 1.25%.

Bonds, shares plus gold and silver fell sharply around the world this morning after the U.S. Federal Reserve again suggested an end to their easy money policies. Data also showed China's economy slowing down amid growing concerns that a credit crunch in China is worsening.

Cross Currency Table ? (Bloomberg)

Gold fell to a more than two-year low, while silver was at its lowest since 2010. Gold fell 2.7% and silver slumped by 4.5%.

The sell-off began after Fed chairman Ben Bernanke again suggested that U.S. economic growth was strong enough to begin tapering back on its $85 billion in monthly asset purchases later this year.

Gold in USD, 2 Year ? (GoldCore)

Ten-year U.S. Treasury note yields hit 15-month highs of about 2.38% after the comments sparking a slump in global equity and bond markets.

The FTSE fell 1.8% in early trade, while the Dax was down 2.4% and the CAC 40 down 2.1%.

The selling accelerated when a survey of China's factories showed activity slumping to a nine-month low just as a squeeze in the nation's money markets sent short term rates to record highs.

Asian stocks outside Japan suffered their biggest daily loss since late 2011, German Government bond futures dropped to their lowest levels since February and oil slumped by around $1.50 a barrel.

Gold in USD, 3 Year ? (GoldCore)

Perhaps most concerning is the very sharp selloff in the UK and other European government bond markets which have seen very sharp falls.

The market slump is also due to the fact that many bond and equity markets had become overvalued despite deteriorating fundamentals.

This deterioration in the fundamentals of the global economy may be more important that the Fed suggesting that they will ?taper? their extremely unorthodox and massive debt monetisation programme.

The Fed has been suggesting that this would happen for many months and as ever it is always best to watch what central bankers do rather than what they say.

Some market participants may be realising that markets, and bond markets in particular, are hopelessly addicted to ultra-loose monetary policies, the printing of money to buy bonds and currency debasement.

Conversely, these fundamentals are actually bullish for gold and silver in the medium and long term.

The smart, store of wealth, money will continue to gradually accumulate physical bullion on dips like this.

Commercial traders, the so-called "smart money" in the futures market have twice as many long positions as they do short, as per the latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report. Meanwhile, the speculators, the so-called "dumb money" have slightly more short positions.

Considering that the commercial traders tend to be biased to the short side, this indicates they are confident that prices will soon rise.

Ignore the noise of the Fed and continue to focus on the long term fundamentals driving the precious metals market.

Compound enhances SSRI antidepressant's effects in mice

June 21, 2013 ? A synthetic compound is able to turn off "secondary" vacuum cleaners in the brain that take up serotonin, resulting in the "happy" chemical being more plentiful, scientists from the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio have discovered. Their study, released June 18 by The Journal of Neuroscience, points to novel targets to treat depression.

Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that carries chemical signals, is associated with feelings of wellness. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed antidepressants that block a specific "vacuum cleaner" for serotonin (the serotonin transporter, or SERT) from taking up serotonin, resulting in more supply of the neurotransmitter in circulation in the extracellular fluid of the brain.

Delicate balance

"Serotonin is released by neurons in the brain," said Lyn Daws, Ph.D., professor of physiology and pharmacology in the School of Medicine. "Too much or too little may be a bad thing. It is thought that having too little serotonin is linked to depression. That's why we think Prozac-type drugs (SSRIs) work, by stopping the serotonin transporter from taking up serotonin from extracellular fluid in the brain."

A problem with SSRIs is that many depressed patients experience modest or no therapeutic benefit. It turns out that, while SSRIs block the activity of the serotonin transporter, they don't block other "vacuum cleaners." "Until now we did not appreciate the presence of backup cleaners for serotonin," Dr. Daws said. "We were not the first to show their presence in the brain, but we were among the first show that they were limiting the ability of the SSRIs to increase serotonin signaling in the brain. The study described in this new paper is the first demonstration of enhancing the antidepressant-like effect of an SSRI by concurrently blocking these backup vacuum cleaners."

Serotonin ceiling

Even if SERT activity is blocked, the backup vacuum cleaners (called organic cation transporters) keep a ceiling on how high the serotonin levels can rise, which likely limits the optimal therapeutic benefit to the patient, Dr. Daws said.

"Right now, the compound we have, decynium-22, is not an agent that we want to give to people in clinical trials," she said. "We are not there yet. Where we are is being able to use this compound to identify new targets in the brain for antidepressant activity and to turn to medicinal chemists to design molecules to block these secondary vacuum cleaners."
