Investigators say a shorted-out power cord caused the fire Saturday that killed the first African-American University of Louisville football player.
Investigators say the flames that killed Laurence Simmons started in his bedroom, between him and the door.
The fire broke out around 10:30 Saturday morning in a Louisville house that had been converted to apartments. Simmons was in his room alone at the time.
"He was just by himself, he was in his bedroom and it's a small bedroom. The fire started between him and the doorway, it actually started in the doorway so he wasn't able to get through the doorway opening," says Henry Ott with the Louisville Fire Department.
Simmons' apartment was in the basement and the other person who lived down there wasn't home at the time.
All of the other residents made it out okay.
Simmons played football at University of Louisville in 1952. He was 79-years-old.
